Pelion,<br \/>\nthe pines, they say, pushed right through Neptune&#8217;s waves<br \/>\nto the surf at Phasis, Ae\u00ebtes&#8217; realm,<br \/>\nwhen the hand-picked force, those young oaks of Greece,<br \/>\nwanting to snatch from Colchis the Golden Fleece,<br \/>\nrisked riding the salty waves on a ship,<br \/>\nand brushed the sky-blue sea with fir-wood oars.<br \/>\nAthena, who protects their citadel,<br \/>\ninvented their light flying vehicle,<br \/>\nweaving the pine boards into one curved keel.<\/p>\n<p>This ship was a first for the sea goddess.<br \/>\nWhen with its prow it plowed her wind-blown swell,<br \/>\nand its oar strokes sprayed white spume on her waves,<br \/>\na face arose from the froth-covered strait,<br \/>\na miracle the sea nymphs marveled at.<\/p>\n<p>This one and many others they beheld,<br \/>\nthe mortals, staring in the ocean sun:<br \/>\nnymphs rising out, naked, breasts in the foam.<\/p>\n<p>Then Peleus was on fire for the nymph Thetis.<br \/>\nThen Thetis was not above a human match.<br \/>\nThen even father Jupiter knew it:<br \/>\nshe was meant to be wife for Peleus.<\/p>\n<p>(The whole long poem is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stoa.org\/diotima\/anthology\/cat64.shtml\">well translated by Thomas Banks<\/a>.
