(By &#8220;civic,&#8221; we  don&#8217;t mean civility and consensus, but concrete, active work by citizens&#8211;some of which is pretty contentious.)<\/p>\n<p>We have a policy statement on &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.novemberfifth.org\/policy.html#education\">Putting Citizens Back in the Center of Education<\/a>.&#8221; It describes education as not just the job of schools, but as a community-wide function whose purpose is to transmit values, culture, knowledge, and skills to the next generation.<\/p>\n<p>We also have some <a href=\"http:\/\/www.novemberfifth.org\/examples.html\">interesting examples<\/a> of civic work and a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.novemberfifth.org\/news.html\">&#8220;news&#8221; page<\/a> with clips and blog feeds about civic engagement.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been working on the website of the November Fifth Coalition, whose purpose is to inject civic themes into the 2008 election.
