I&#8217;m happy to support the launch of TCU&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsevents.tcu.edu\/news\/news_000610.asp\">Center for Civic Literacy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I hope that my speech does not sound like this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cscs.umich.edu\/~crshalizi\/Generation-X_Articles\/brinkley\/\">article <\/a>by Douglas Brinkley from 1994, entitled &#8220;Educating the Generation Called &#8216;X.'&#8221; The links are to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cscs.umich.edu\/~crshalizi\/\">Cosma Shazili&#8217;s<\/a> commentary:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>But all in all, to paraphrase Gertrude Stein, a &#8220;young person is a young person is a young person.&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cscs.umich.edu\/~crshalizi\/Generation-X_Articles\/brinkley\/essence.html\">They are essentially no different from their predecessors<\/a>; they simply want to be regarded as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cscs.umich.edu\/~crshalizi\/Generation-X_Articles\/brinkley\/individuals.html\">individuals<\/a>.   By 1988, those born between 1961 and 1981 will comprise the largest voting bloc ever in American history, numbering <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cscs.umich.edu\/~crshalizi\/Generation-X_Articles\/brinkley\/individuals2.html\">80 million strong<\/a>. They will soon <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cscs.umich.edu\/~crshalizi\/Generation-X_Articles\/brinkley\/mangled-metaphor.html\">step up to the plate to try to clean up the mess<\/a>. Their teacher should strive to do <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cscs.umich.edu\/~crshalizi\/Generation-X_Articles\/brinkley\/education.html\">what education has traditionally done for the young<\/a>: Bring out their best, encourage hope and nourish their imaginations.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m on my way to Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, where I&#8217;ll be speaking about&#8211;what else?&#8211;youth civic engagement.
