{"id":4220,"date":"2003-06-12T15:23:24","date_gmt":"2003-06-12T15:23:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/peterlevine.ws\/?p=4220"},"modified":"2003-06-12T15:23:24","modified_gmt":"2003-06-12T15:23:24","slug":"why-blog","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/peterlevine.ws\/?p=4220","title":{"rendered":"why blog?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A friend of mine saw my <a href=\"May2003blog.htm#May23\">May<\/p>\n<p>23 entry<\/a>, which is about the moral dangers of seeking fame, and asked: &quot;Is<\/p>\n<p>writing a blog part of an effort to become famous?&quot; I replied (in effect):<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I have looked deep within and discovered that 75% of my original motivation<\/p>\n<p>for starting the blog was self-aggrandizement.&quot; (At least I&#8217;m honest.) But<\/p>\n<p>I do have other goals, including: <\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>To explore the ethics of recording\n<p>ideas and experiences in a public way&#151;that is, in a way that&#8217;s honest and<\/p>\n<p>potentially interesting for other people, and that respects others&#8217; privacy rights<\/p>\n<p>and my own duties to the institutions that I work for. Being public in this way<\/p>\n<p>is somewhat tricky, and it&#8217;s supposed to be a modest experiment in living democratically.<\/li>\n<li>To\n<p>experiment with this new genre (&quot;the blog&quot;) by writing unusual kinds<\/p>\n<p>of entries. For the most part, I try not to offer statements of personal opinion<\/p>\n<p>or simple links to other sites, but instead I like to pose moral or philosophical<\/p>\n<p>questions that have arisen in some recent experience.<\/li>\n<li>To create a notebook\n<p>from which I can later borrow for longer, more systematic writing.<\/li>\n<li>To\n<p>have a platform for presenting short comments for a small audience, easily and<\/p>\n<p>quickly.<\/li>\n<li>To present myself to anyone who&#8217;s interested.
