It&#8217;s a crowded warren of rooms on an<\/p>\n<p>upstairs floor of a former industrial building, where kids are intensely<\/p>\n<p>involved in regular classes, public-service internships, and the study<\/p>\n<p>of public policy. If we are going to have broad-based, creative, informed<\/p>\n<p>leadership in the District of Columbia (and other troubled cities), then<\/p>\n<p>experiments like Chavez must work. It seems quite clear that the school<\/p>\n<p><i>is<\/i> successful at present&#151;one hundred percent of its graduates<\/p>\n<p>attend college, and all seem inspired to work on social problems. There<\/p>\n<p>are, however, the usual questions about whether the Chavez model is replicable,<\/p>\n<p>or whether it depends on remarkably charismatic and dedicated leadership.<\/p>\n<p>Today, I was sent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fepproject.org\/infocommons\/intro.html\">this<\/p>\n<p>article<\/a> on the <b>Internet commons<\/b> by its author, a former president<\/p>\n<p>of the American Library Association.
