{"id":4145,"date":"2003-02-14T16:43:11","date_gmt":"2003-02-14T16:43:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/peterlevine.ws\/?p=4145"},"modified":"2003-02-14T16:43:11","modified_gmt":"2003-02-14T16:43:11","slug":"european-anti-americanism-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/peterlevine.ws\/?p=4145","title":{"rendered":"European anti-Americanism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>During a conference call of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.deliberative-democracy.net\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.peterlevine.ws\/images\/ddc_logo.GIF\" width=\"164\" height=\"33\" border=\"0\"><\/a>we<\/p>\n<p>were asked to say what we are doing to keep our spirits up during this<\/p>\n<p>time of looming war. Most of my friends and colleagues reported practically<\/p>\n<p>useful or spiritually worthy activities that they have embarked on recently<\/p>\n<p>to bolster their spirits&#151;ranging from playing music to rediscovering<\/p>\n<p>grammar school friends to co-teaching a course with Noam Chomsky (literally). All<\/p>\n<p>I could think of was our family decision this morning to follow the instructions<\/p>\n<p>in the newspaper and buy plastic sheeting for an emergency shelter room.<\/p>\n<p>(Unfortunately, all the sheeting is gone from local stores). <\/p>\n<p><a name=\"antiwar\"><\/a>Although I probably should focus on the damage<\/p>\n<p>that we may be about to do in the Middle East, my actual thoughts range<\/p>\n<p>from fear for my family, to irritation at the way the Bush Administration<\/p>\n<p>handles diplomacy, to equally profound irritation with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/articles\/A54107-2003Feb10.html\">European<\/p>\n<p>anti-War movement<\/a>. Everyone&#8217;s instinct in a time of crisis is to use<\/p>\n<p>it for pre-existing political ends, whether they want to bash American<\/p>\n<p>culture or impose US power on the Middle East. Each group interprets everyone<\/p>\n<p>else&#8217;s motives as narrowly selfish or self-indulgent. And all the parties<\/p>\n<p>act so as to confirm the worst interpretations of their enemies.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>During a conference call of the we were asked to say what we are doing to keep our spirits up during this time of looming war.
