These entities offer civic education courses within a liberal arts curriculum. At least 13 are new initiatives at public universities. They may also produce research and public programs related to civic life.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Centers and initiatives that\u00a0<strong>engage higher education with communities<\/strong>\u00a0in part to enhance their students\u2019 civic skills and knowledge. These initiatives have roots in the Land Grant tradition (including the HBCU Land Grants) and the \u201cWisconsin Idea,\u201d and many are ambitious and innovative today.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Democracy research centers<\/strong>\u00a0and institutes based in universities that aim to improve democracy or civil society by generating research, tools, and events for the public.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Panel sessions will explore these three categories, while plenary discussion will compare them and provoke reflection on questions like these:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>To what extent should college-level civic education be about reading and discussing texts?<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>To what extent should civic education be experiential, and which kinds of experiences are most valuable?<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Should colleges and universities be embedded in and accountable to local communities, to states, to the nation, to transnational communities, and\/or to the globe?<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>What does it mean to promote viewpoint diversity in each type of program? Are there other dimensions of disagreement that are also (or more) relevant than ideology?<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Is the goal of civic education to build support for the constitutional order, to subject the system to critical scrutiny and improvement, or both?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We anticipate rich discussions and constructive disagreements that will enrich participants\u2019 views of these issues while also strengthening the intellectual community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tufts.us13.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=ae4520dfd3edc96f90b836dd1&amp;id=bf898c35bf&amp;e=ce60dcfae1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>register on the summit site<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>and check it for the full agenda and list of speakers.
