April 10 | Tufts University, Medford, MA<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Jonathan M. Tisch College of Civic Life at Tufts University and the\u00a0Alliance for Civics in the Academy (ACA)<\/a>, with support from GBH<\/a>, are proud to host a national summit on the state of civics in higher education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The summit will convene practitioners, faculty, administrators, and students from across the United States to explore, discuss and compare models of civic practice in higher education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Summit speakers and panelists will include Amy Binder<\/a>, Mary Clark<\/a>, Michael Clune<\/a>, Dayna Cunningham<\/a>, Andrew Delbanco<\/a>, Fonna Forman<\/a>, Bryan Garsten<\/a>, Leslie Garvin<\/a>, Caroline Attardo Genco<\/a>, Tetyana Hoggan-Kloubert<\/a>, Peter Levine<\/a>, Jessica Kimpell Johnson<\/a>, Jennifer Brick Murtazashvili<\/a>, Josiah Ober<\/a>, Mindy Romero<\/a>, Jenna Silber Storey<\/a>, Marisol Morales<\/a>, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The summit will bring together three categories of university-based centers and programs\u2014including diverse representatives from each\u2014that are influential and widespread:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Colleges or programs of\u00a0Civic Thought or Civic Studies<\/strong>. These entities offer civic education courses within a liberal arts curriculum. At least 13 are new initiatives at public universities. They may also produce research and public programs related to civic life.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Centers and initiatives that\u00a0engage higher education with communities<\/strong>\u00a0in part to enhance their students\u2019 civic skills and knowledge. These initiatives have roots in the Land Grant tradition (including the HBCU Land Grants) and the \u201cWisconsin Idea,\u201d and many are ambitious and innovative today.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Democracy research centers<\/strong>\u00a0and institutes based in universities that aim to improve democracy or civil society by generating research, tools, and events for the public.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Panel sessions will explore these three categories, while plenary discussion will compare them and provoke reflection on questions like these:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
