{"id":24375,"date":"2021-05-25T14:07:46","date_gmt":"2021-05-25T18:07:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peterlevine.ws\/?p=24375"},"modified":"2022-01-16T14:46:45","modified_gmt":"2022-01-16T19:46:45","slug":"survey-finds-regional-racial-divides-in-k-12-remote-schooling-impact-during-pandemic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/peterlevine.ws\/?p=24375","title":{"rendered":"Survey Finds Regional, Racial Divides in K-12 Remote Schooling Impact During Pandemic"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I did this analysis, which was released today &#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">New nationwide survey by Tufts University researchers finds that parents credit schools with limiting academic harms but see damage to social relationships.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 70% of K-12 students across the country experienced some remote schooling during the 2020-21 school year, with stark differences emerging along regional and racial lines and the worst effects on students\u2019 social relationships, according to a new, nationally representative study conducted by Ipsos, using its KnowledgePanel, for the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/equityresearch.tufts.edu\/\">Tufts University Research Group on Equity in Health, Wealth and Civic Engagement<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thirty percent of students in the South attended entirely in-person, compared to just 11.5% in the West. Sixty-one percent of students in the West attended entirely remotely, significantly more than in the other regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><\/td><td>Northeast<\/td><td>Midwest<\/td><td>South<\/td><td>West<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Entirely in-person<\/td><td>17%<\/td><td>27%<\/td><td>30%<\/td><td>11.5%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Entirely remote<\/td><td>50%<\/td><td>32%<\/td><td>26%<\/td><td>61%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Mix of both<\/td><td>30%<\/td><td>36%<\/td><td>35%<\/td><td>23%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Did not attend school<\/td><td>3%<\/td><td>4%<\/td><td>9%<\/td><td>5%<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>White students were most likely to attend in person. Parents or guardians of color were somewhat more likely than white parents to report negative academic experiences with remote learning, but that difference was within the margin of error. Statistics based on these 248 responses have a margin of error of +\/- 6.2 percentage points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>About 24% of K-12 students attended school entirely in-person, 39% entirely remotely, 32% in a hybrid mix of both modes, and nearly 6% of school-aged children did not attend school at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Parents reported the worst effects on their children\u2019s social relationships, followed by physical fitness and emotional wellbeing. On academics, slightly more parents reported positive than negative effects from the measures their schools took to limit the spread of COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All data included in the survey was reported by parents or guardians describing their own children. Parents were not asked about the overall impact of the pandemic, but specifically about the measures that their children\u2019s schools had taken to limit the spread of the virus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMany parents seem to credit schools with making the best of the situation, although some see bad effects, especially on social relationships,\u201d said&nbsp;<strong>Peter Levine<\/strong>, an associate dean at Tufts\u2019 Tisch College of Civic Life and co-principal investigator of this study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tufts University\u2019s Research Group on Equity in Health, Wealth and Civic Engagement was established in 2019 as part of a strategic effort to use resources and expertise across the university to address major global issues. It brings together researchers from across the university to discuss and investigate aspects of equity and inequity in the United States and the world.
