This has been my top extracurricular priority for the past year and a half (working along with many wonderful colleagues), and I&#8217;m excited it&#8217;s out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There will be a free national forum to discuss it later today, and you can register to attend <a href=\"https:\/\/forum.educatingforamericandemocracy.org\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/forum.educatingforamericandemocracy.org\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <em>The Wall Street Journal<\/em>, six former U.S. education secretaries (Lamar Alexander, Arne Duncan, John King, Rod Paige, Richard Riley and Margaret Spellings) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/america-needs-history-and-civics-education-to-promote-unity-11614641530\">write together<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Despite our differences on policy and priorities, we believe that the Roadmap to Educating for American Democracy provides a promising path. The project is the result of a 19-month collaboration among more than 300 scholars, educators, practitioners and students from diverse backgrounds. The ambition of this plan is to re-establish civics and American history as essential components of education.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>There has also been good coverage so far in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edweek.org\/teaching-learning\/new-national-civics-guidelines-carve-a-middle-path-for-teachers-in-a-polarized-climate\/2021\/03\">EdWeek<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/show\/can-teaching-civics-in-schools-help-break-down-barriers-in-american-society\">Newshour<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/education\/civics-social-studies-education-plan\/2021\/03\/01\/e245e34a-747f-11eb-9537-496158cc5fd9_story.html\">Washington Post<\/a>, \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wgbh.org\/news\/education\/2021\/03\/01\/hundreds-of-scholars-across-political-spectrum-recommend-new-curriculum-for-civics\">WGBH<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.the74million.org\/after-year-of-peril-for-democracy-scholars-release-new-framework-for-history-and-civics-in-schools\/\">The74<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Educating for American Democracy (EAD) Roadmap and related materials are now public on an interactive website.
