{"id":22827,"date":"2020-05-28T10:24:56","date_gmt":"2020-05-28T14:24:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peterlevine.ws\/?p=22827"},"modified":"2022-01-16T14:43:19","modified_gmt":"2022-01-16T19:43:19","slug":"a-civic-silver-lining","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/peterlevine.ws\/?p=22827","title":{"rendered":"a civic silver lining?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Thanks to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usafmc.org\/fm-engagement\">Former Members of Congress Association<\/a>, I joined Former Member Dennis Ross (R-FL) and mayors Nan Whaley (D-Dayton), Francis Suarez (R-Miami) and Marty Walsh (D-Boston), for a discussion of civic engagement during the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I particularly appreciated Mayor Walsh&#8217;s eloquence about respecting poorly-paid work. His point expanded into a broader discussion of how to get <em>everyone<\/em> involved in the &#8220;public work&#8221; of rebuilding our community and country. I ended up thinking that the attitudinal effects of the pandemic may well be positive. We may care more about each other and feel more motivated to work together on public goals. The fact that the crisis is widely (although inequitably) shared will provide an opportunity to bring Americans together.
