{"id":22822,"date":"2020-05-27T17:59:01","date_gmt":"2020-05-27T21:59:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peterlevine.ws\/?p=22822"},"modified":"2022-01-16T14:43:19","modified_gmt":"2022-01-16T19:43:19","slug":"the-coronavirus-information-commons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/peterlevine.ws\/?p=22822","title":{"rendered":"the Coronavirus information commons"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/opinion-the-coronavirus-is-democratizing-knowledge\/\">Wired<\/a>, Natalie Chyi\u00a0offers an excellent list of ways that people are fighting misinformation&#8211;and promoting reliable and useful information&#8211;during the pandemic:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Neighborhoods are creating S<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/onezero.medium.com\/as-the-country-shuts-down-neighborhood-slack-groups-come-to-the-rescue-28b1b058bc14\" target=\"_blank\">lack groups<\/a>\u00a0and communities are coming up with\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/future-perfect\/2020\/3\/24\/21188779\/mutual-aid-coronavirus-covid-19-volunteering?fbclid=IwAR3nrrCUWAa-v0DC3e8_gCwTzvqWoga86ElYpzyQygusqfhkyrAcligFQ-w\" target=\"_blank\">mutual aid spreadsheets<\/a>\u00a0to coordinate aid and support each other. &#8230; Local geographies have been reconstructed in online spaces, most notably as students are rebuilding their universities within\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2020\/3\/31\/21200972\/college-students-graduation-minecraft-coronavirus-school-closures\" target=\"_blank\">Minecraft<\/a>. &#8230; .\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/freely-sharing-the-sum-of-all-knowledge\/covid19-infodemic-wikipedians-librarians-1lib1ref-8d2918ed4f06\" target=\"_blank\">Volunteers on Wikipedia<\/a>\u00a0have been working tirelessly to ensure that the site serves reliable and up-to-date information, especially surrounding the virus. Students are compiling master lists of summer internship\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/LawSchool\/comments\/fuf8ki\/tracking_summer_program_changes\/\" target=\"_blank\">updates<\/a>, cancellations, and\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/gcreddy42\/hiring2020\/blob\/master\/README.md\" target=\"_blank\">opportunities<\/a>\u00a0across various industries. Groups are creating crowdsourced\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/coronavirustechhandbook.com\/home\" target=\"_blank\">libraries<\/a>\u00a0of resources tailored to the unique needs of everyone from mourners to remote workers to policymakers. New\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/helpwithcovid.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">online platforms<\/a>\u00a0have been created for specialists like doctors, engineers, and scientists to find and contribute their expertise to ongoing relief projects.\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/search?q=coronavirus+OR+covid19\" target=\"_blank\">Thousands<\/a>\u00a0of Covid-19 related\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/opensource.org\/osd\" target=\"_blank\">open-source projects<\/a>\u00a0are popping up, with the source code and documentation freely available to enable their use.
