Hannah? Dr. Arendt? Let&#8217;s talk about Irving Howe, can we? I was thinking maybe we could start with him. In 1972, he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commentarymagazine.com\/articles\/philip-roth-reconsidered\/\">accused<\/a> me &#8220;thinness of culture, &#8230; of\u00a0<em>ressentiment<\/em> [and] freefloating contempt and animus.&#8221; He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dissentmagazine.org\/online_articles\/banality-and-brilliance-irving-howe-on-hannah-arendt\">said<\/a> that your Eichmann book\u00a0demonstrated &#8220;surging contempt&#8221; and &#8220;the supreme assurance of the intellectual looking down&#8221; on others. Now, was that fair? Where did he get off accusing\u00a0<em>us<\/em> of contempt in such a contemptuous way?<\/p>\n<p><em>Heinrich<\/em> [Bl\u00fccher, Hannah Arendt&#8217;s husband, buried to her right]:\u00a0<em>Wer spricht das?\u00a0Wer ist da?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/memorial\/2968\/hannah-arendt\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/images.findagrave.com\/photos250\/photos\/2006\/287\/2968_116094500455.jpg\" width=\"250\" height=\"59\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Hannah:<\/em>\u00a0English, please, Heinrich. You still need to practice your English. It&#8217;s just Philip. Philip Roth&#8211;the young novelist? Although he actually doesn&#8217;t look so young any more. He&#8217;s buried on the other side of me now.<\/p>\n<p><em>Heinrich: <\/em>What? <em>Forever?<\/em> Did you agree to this?<\/p>\n<p><em>Philip:<\/em> How about Gershom Scholem, Hannah? He <a href=\"http:\/\/coreyrobin.com\/2015\/06\/09\/hannah-arendt-and-philip-roth-parallel-lives\/\">accused us both<\/a> of being self-hating, anti-Semitic Jews. Who made <em>him<\/em> the arbiter?<\/p>\n<p><em>Heinrich: <\/em>Could we talk to Leon about getting this fellow moved somewhere else?<\/p>\n<p><em>Philip:<\/em> Hannah, tell me about Berlin in the twenties. [<em>Wistfully<\/em>] You guys didn&#8217;t have to wait &#8217;til the sixties for the sexual revolution, did you? Talk about putting the id back in Yid&#8211;you Weimar intellectuals already took care of that. Cafes, cabarets, it must have been great. But Heidegger?
