The green belly of a wave stretches, tautens
\nUnder its own mass–filaments or nerves
\nOf paler green stretching to their limits
\nAs the body, relentless, falls forward.
\nBut the wave is a hybrid creature, its
\nSober underside carrying a head
\nThat’s white and airy, that boils steadily,
\nAnd the head grows as the belly slides under,
\nAnd the whole thing gives up, flopping itself
\nOn the rattling shingle, tossing froth,
\nWhile behind, what had seemed a mere bulge
\nIs the new wave, its skin stretched to breaking.<\/p>\n
