{"id":18908,"date":"2017-09-11T12:48:54","date_gmt":"2017-09-11T16:48:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/peterlevine.ws\/?p=18908"},"modified":"2017-09-11T19:26:26","modified_gmt":"2017-09-11T23:26:26","slug":"assessment-criteria-for-participation-in-a-seminar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/peterlevine.ws\/?p=18908","title":{"rendered":"assessment criteria for participation in a seminar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thinking that I should be explicit about how I define good participation in a seminar that I&#8217;m teaching, I circulated these eight criteria:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Being responsive to other students. (Responsiveness needn&#8217;t always be immediate, verbal, or occur within the class discussion itself.)<\/li>\n<li>Building on others&#8217; contributions, and sometimes making links among different people&#8217;s contributions or between what they have said and the text.<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrating genuine respect for the others, where respect does not require agreement. (In fact, sometimes respect requires explicit <em>disagreement<\/em> because you take the other person&#8217;s ideas seriously.)<\/li>\n<li>Focusing on the topic and the texts, which does not preclude drawing unexpected connections beyond them.<\/li>\n<li>Taking risks, trying out ideas that you don&#8217;t necessarily endorse, and asking questions that might be perceived as naive or uninformed.<\/li>\n<li>Seeking truth or clarity or insight (instead of other objectives).<\/li>\n<li>Exercising freedom of speech along with a degree of tact and concern for the other people.<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrating responsibility for the other students&#8217; learning in what you say (and occasionally by a decision not to speak).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Students also privately wrote how they will assess themselves.
