{"id":18536,"date":"2017-05-19T18:58:53","date_gmt":"2017-05-19T22:58:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/peterlevine.ws\/?p=18536"},"modified":"2017-05-19T18:58:53","modified_gmt":"2017-05-19T22:58:53","slug":"the-hollowing-out-of-us-democracy-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/peterlevine.ws\/?p=18536","title":{"rendered":"the Hollowing Out of US Democracy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In lieu of an original post here today, I&#8217;ll link to a <a href=\"http:\/\/evidencebase.usc.edu\/?p=1961\">new post of mine<\/a> on <em>The Evidence Base<\/em>, a group blog from CESR, the Center for Economic and Social Research at University of Southern California. \u00a0I argue that the decline of certain types of associations has left many Americans, especially White working-class citizens, in what my colleagues at the Tisch College of Civic Life and I call \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/study-60-percent-of-rural-millennials-lack-access-to-a-political-life-74513\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Civic Deserts<\/a>.\u201d This trend does not explain why a Republican president won in 2016 or why he has taken certain views of policy and ideology. But it does explain the appeal of his leadership style. Citizens who have never belonged to everyday local associations with responsible and accountable leaders do not expect such leadership from their president.<\/p>\n<p>I also explain\u00a0my <a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.proofpoint.com\/v2\/url?u=http-3A__peterlevine.ws_-3Fp-3D17725&amp;d=DwMGaQ&amp;c=clK7kQUTWtAVEOVIgvi0NU5BOUHhpN0H8p7CSfnc_gI&amp;r=BGBTGy0X7i05zNxTBzOn6s5w8enQwHgobvj9mHnQuGo&amp;m=RiMQ0L5gIFmRFz3PlPKO83QtzZp33Lw92ARel0FU_Wg&amp;s=t5Tcsd0JN9KY5LxAHkKQ3gtigV3cNb0_XI8lpLfkVek&amp;e=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SPUD<\/a> framework, which stands for Scale, Pluralism, Unity, and Depth.
