{"id":16730,"date":"2016-04-11T16:01:38","date_gmt":"2016-04-11T20:01:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/peterlevine.ws\/?p=16730"},"modified":"2016-04-11T16:01:38","modified_gmt":"2016-04-11T20:01:38","slug":"popular-theories-of-political-psychology-challenged-by-data","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/peterlevine.ws\/?p=16730","title":{"rendered":"popular theories of political psychology, challenged by data"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(Washington, DC) I&#8217;ve raised <a href=\"http:\/\/peterlevine.ws\/?p=14220\">doubts<\/a> about\u00a0Moral Foundations Theory, which offers valuable\u00a0insights\u00a0but classifies individuals too crudely, overlooks the importance of deliberation and narrative in the construction of our moral ideas, and fails to explain historical change in moral opinions. I&#8217;ve also <a href=\"http:\/\/peterlevine.ws\/?p=10284\">complained<\/a> about research\u00a0that classifies conservatives as having negative character traits. And I&#8217;ve\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/peterlevine.ws\/?p=13374\">argued<\/a> that\u00a0Amy Chua and Jed Rubenfeld&#8217;s bestseller that purports to explain economic success is\u00a0unscientific.<\/p>\n<p>Research reported in the press during this week has\u00a0reinforced my skepticism:<\/p>\n<p>First,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/ajps.12255\/abstract;jsessionid=9F73D38A51FE04EAE17101B0E9A954F2.f02t04\">Kevin B. Smith and colleagues<\/a>,\u00a0writing in the <em>American Journal of Political Science,<\/em> cast doubts on three strong claims of the Moral Foundations Theory: that the dispositions labeled &#8220;foundations&#8221; are stable for individuals over time, that these foundations predict and explain political ideology (and hence explain ideological differences), and that the foundations are inherited&#8211;as they must be if they result from Darwinian selection. Surveying twins along with other family members, Smith et al. find that &#8220;moral foundations are not particularly stable within individuals across time, at least compared to ideology.&#8221; At a given point, individuals&#8217; answers to Moral Foundations questions do relate to their ideologies, but their views\u00a0change over time. The causal arrow seems to point from ideology to moral foundations, as much as the reverse. Presumably, people are influenced by events, experiences, and discussions to revise their political views, thereby changing their Moral Foundations (which are not actually\u00a0foundational). Thus the stream of research exemplified in Moral Foundations Theory has been &#8220;overly dismissive of the role of conscious deliberation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Second, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S019188691630232X\">Steven G. Ludeke &amp; Stig Hebbelstrup Rye Rasmussen<\/a> use a large survey to dispute previous work that had associated conservative ideology with &#8220;psychoticism,&#8221; which means being \u201ccold, impersonal, lacking in sympathy, unfriendly, untrustful, odd, unemotional, unhelpful, antisocial, lacking in insight, strange, with paranoid ideas that people were against him.&#8221; Quite to the contrary, they\u00a0find a <em>negative<\/em> association between psychoticism and conservatism.<\/p>\n<p>These authors still find that conservatives tend to be more authoritarian than liberals are. My complaint about that kind of finding\u00a0is that it&#8217;s ahistorical. At various\u00a0historical moments, the right or left may be more favorable to authority or to disruption and change. The current association between conservatism and authoritarianism in the US tells us more about the political situation\u00a0today\u00a0than it does about fundamental political psychology. But in any case, we can drop the association between\u00a0psychoticism and conservatism, since it&#8217;s false.<\/p>\n<p>Third (in the same journal), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0191886915301227\">Joshua Hart and Christopher F. Chabris<\/a> tested whether the Chua &amp;\u00a0Rubenfeld &#8220;Triple Package&#8221; of &#8220;impulse control, personal insecurity, and a belief in the superiority of one&#8217;s cultural or ethnic group&#8221; predict economic achievement in modern America. It\u00a0does not. Parental education (a proxy for\u00a0social class) does, as does\u00a0the individual&#8217;s own cognitive ability and self-control. As one might expect, having rich parents, doing well on tests, and behaving yourself lead to prosperity in the USA. Believing in the superiority of your\u00a0cultural or ethnic group is no help at all.
