{"id":16142,"date":"2015-12-10T07:36:15","date_gmt":"2015-12-10T12:36:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/peterlevine.ws\/?p=16142"},"modified":"2015-12-10T07:36:15","modified_gmt":"2015-12-10T12:36:15","slug":"new-chapter-on-generational-trends-in-us-politics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/peterlevine.ws\/?p=16142","title":{"rendered":"new chapter on generational trends in US politics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(Orlando, FL) I was asked to write a chapter about the US for an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marcialpons.es\/libros\/desafeccion-politica-y-gobernabilidad\/9788416402878\/\">international b<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.marcialpons.es\/libros\/desafeccion-politica-y-gobernabilidad\/9788416402878\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.marcialpons.es:8080\/img\/portadas\/9788416402878.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"283\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.marcialpons.es\/libros\/desafeccion-politica-y-gobernabilidad\/9788416402878\/\">o<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.marcialpons.es\/libros\/desafeccion-politica-y-gobernabilidad\/9788416402878\/\">ok<\/a> about &#8220;youth disaffection with politics.&#8221; I looked at 40-year trends in more than 20 survey questions, ranging from trust in government to support for government programs to turnout. I really did not find evidence of &#8220;youth disaffection&#8221; in the US. All Americans are pretty alienated, but it isn&#8217;t a generational pattern. Most of the trends I looked at aren&#8217;t generational at all&#8211;they rise and fall with recent news and events.<\/p>\n<p>My <a href=\"https:\/\/www.academia.edu\/19563582\/_Youth_Disaffection_with_Politics_The_US_Case_in_Pedro_P%C3%A9rez_Herrero_ed._Desaffecci%C3%B3n_pol%C3%ADtica_y_gobernabilidad_el_reto_politico_Madrid_Instituto_Universitario_de_Investigaci%C3%B3n_en_Estudios_Latinamericanos_2015_pp._45-60\">chapter<\/a> is mainly an argument against thinking of alienation from politics and government in generational terms, at least for the US. I even venture that a generational framework is generally problematic. It distracts attention from the most important phenomenon, which is the stubborn replication of the same inequalities from decade to decade. I am for studying and supporting youth, but not because today&#8217;s youth are different in some fundamental way from their predecessors.
