{"id":15511,"date":"2015-07-29T11:49:55","date_gmt":"2015-07-29T15:49:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/peterlevine.ws\/?p=15511"},"modified":"2022-05-19T11:08:25","modified_gmt":"2022-05-19T15:08:25","slug":"heading-to-ukraine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/peterlevine.ws\/?p=15511","title":{"rendered":"heading to Ukraine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I am on my way tomorrow to Lviv and Chernovitsi in Ukraine, to co-teach the <a href=\"http:\/\/peterlevine.ws\/?p=14707\">Summer Institute of Civic Studies and Civic Education<\/a>\u00a0there. This will be\u00a0an\u00a0immeasurably small contribution to what I think is a great cause: the work of the Ukrainian people in constructing a true civil society as the basis of a true\u00a0democracy. If they can achieve that task in a portion\u00a0of the former Soviet Union&#8211;after a period of kleptocracy and violent repression&#8211;they\u00a0will be a beacon for the whole region.<\/p>\n<p>I won&#8217;t blog while traveling but will report afterwards.<\/p>\n<p>By the way, an AP wire story <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2015\/07\/28\/the-associated-press-scholars-drawn-to-conflict-zones-stoke-college-safety-debate.html\">yesterday<\/a> used my trip as its opening\u00a0example of US &#8220;scholars drawn to conflict zones.&#8221; I must emphasize\u00a0that\u00a0Lviv and Chernovitsi are far from any violent conflicts. Many\u00a0colleagues at Tufts (and elsewhere) actually meet\u00a0this description: &#8220;people\u00a0who should be getting on a plane to go to a country that&#8217;s in crisis.&#8221; When I said that phrase, I had in mind professors who fly\u00a0to Sudan or Iraq and really make a difference there. I wasn&#8217;t talking about myself going to Western Ukraine to help lead a political theory seminar for a few days.
