{"id":14629,"date":"2014-12-05T15:00:58","date_gmt":"2014-12-05T20:00:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/peterlevine.ws\/?p=14629"},"modified":"2014-12-05T15:00:58","modified_gmt":"2014-12-05T20:00:58","slug":"teachers-subtle-gender-bias-affects-girls-leadership","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/peterlevine.ws\/?p=14629","title":{"rendered":"subtle gender bias affects girls&#8217; leadership"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My colleagues at Tisch College, the National Education Association, and the American Association of University Women recently released a report entitled <em>Closing the Leadership Gap: How Educators Can Help Girls Lead. <\/em>Gail Bambrick <a href=\"http:\/\/now.tufts.edu\/articles\/typecasting-classroom\">summarizes it well<\/a>. A key finding, as she notes, came from a small experiment:<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"stcpDiv\">\n<blockquote><p>The teachers taking the survey, 76 percent of whom were female, were asked to analyze a statement by a student running for student council president. The statement remained unchanged, except half were told it had been written by \u201cJacob\u201d and the other half thought it was by \u201cEmily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When asked to choose adjectives that described the attributes they saw in each candidate, many chose some of the same words to describe both Jacob and Emily: collaborative, competent, ambitious and determined.<\/p>\n<p>But the differences in teachers\u2019 assessments of Emily and Jacob were significant, according to the study. Jacob was \u201cconfident,\u201d \u201caggressive,\u201d \u201carrogant\u201d and \u201ccharismatic.\u201d Emily was \u201cbubbly,\u201d \u201chard-working,\u201d \u201ccompassionate\u201d and \u201cfeminine.\u201d Among Jacob\u2019s challenges: being \u201coverly confident.\u201d Among Emily\u2019s: she \u201cshowed no authority.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>These teachers generally expressed support for gender-neutral classrooms and boosting girls&#8217; leadership. But most students actually end up in gender-stereotyped roles in high school. \u201cOne big takeaway for us is that even enlightened, experienced teachers with progressive views about leadership can have stereotypes and biases creep up,\u201d says [CIRCLE Deputy Director Kei] Kawashima-Ginsberg. \u201cAnd this is really what affects behavior the most.
