Juan:\u00a0<\/em>We left him in a ditch and I fired two bullets into his arse for being a queer.\u201d*<\/p>\n

Amando:<\/em> You killed Lorca? You and the corporal here?<\/p>\n

Jos\u00e9 (nodding):<\/em> I was there. I would have shot him, too, if the captain hadn’t already wasted two bullets.<\/p>\n

Amando<\/em> pulls a revolver from his coat and rests the grip on the table, pointing the muzzle between the two men. <\/em><\/p>\n

Amando:<\/em> You murdered him because you hated him?<\/p>\n

Juan<\/em>: We executed him to cleanse the nation.<\/p>\n

Amando: <\/em>If there was justice, I would march you to the police station to be tried for murder.<\/p>\n

Juan<\/em>: There is<\/em> justice. It was done.<\/p>\n

Amando:<\/em> It is my duty to try you, and to punish you, because this is the only room where that can possibly happen now. You confess that you murdered Lorca?<\/p>\n

Jos\u00e9 [rising]:<\/em> I will go into the village and find soldiers. This man is crazy.<\/p>\n

Amando shoots Jos\u00e9 in the chest and points the revolver directly at Juan.<\/em><\/p>\n

Amando:<\/em> Your end will the the same as his, but I will give you time to think about it first. He escaped fear and regret; you will not. We will wait.<\/p>\n

A long time passes.<\/em> The old clock ticks. Some hay blows in under the door.<\/em><\/p>\n

Amando: <\/em>You should pray.<\/p>\n

Juan:<\/em> Autumn<\/span> will come with<\/span> snails,<\/span>
\nmisted grapes and bunches of\u00a0<\/span>hills<\/span>
\nbut<\/span> no one will<\/span> watch your eyes<\/span>
\nbecause you<\/span> have died forever<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Amando: <\/em>What! How do you know those words?<\/p>\n

Juan:<\/em> They were Lorca’s last. He said them in the ditch. They made an impression on me.<\/p>\n

Amando:<\/em> You believe that I cannot shoot you now, because you said those lines?<\/p>\n

Juan: <\/em>You cannot.<\/p>\n

Amando: <\/em>If I let you go, you will be boasting and laughing by midnight.<\/p>\n

Juan:<\/em>\u00a0You cannot shoot me now.<\/p>\n
