{"id":12346,"date":"2013-09-03T08:47:47","date_gmt":"2013-09-03T12:47:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/peterlevine.ws\/?p=12346"},"modified":"2013-09-03T08:49:04","modified_gmt":"2013-09-03T12:49:04","slug":"a-debate-about-the-presidents-higher-ed-proposals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/peterlevine.ws\/?p=12346","title":{"rendered":"a debate about the President&#8217;s higher ed proposals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The National Journal&#8217;s Fawn Johnson <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationaljournal.com\/insiders\/education\/the-almost-game-changer-20130903\">writes<\/a>, &#8220;President Obama landed on some sweet talking points in his recent, somewhat rehashed, proposals to make colleges more affordable and more targeted on graduation and employment. &#8220;Higher education should not be a luxury,&#8221; Obama said in Syracuse, N.Y. &#8220;If a higher education is still the best ticket to upward mobility in America&#8211;and it is&#8211;then we&#8217;ve got to make sure it&#8217;s within reach.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Johnson asks, &#8220;What&#8217;s not to like?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I begin my invited response:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We in higher education deserve criticism for high costs and low graduation rates. But I have grave doubts about the goals and the solutions that President Obama proposes.<\/p>\n<p>Consider two colleges.
